    Linear quasi-categories as templicial modules

    We introduce a notion of enriched ∞\infty-categories over a suitable monoidal category, in analogy with quasi-categories over the category of sets. We make use of certain colax monoidal functors, which we call templicial objects, as a variant of simplicial objects respecting the monoidal structure. We relate the resulting enriched quasi-categories to nonassociative Frobenius monoidal functors, allowing us to prove that the free templicial module over an ordinary quasi-category is a linear quasi-category. To any dg-category we associate a linear quasi-category, the linear dg-nerve, which enhances the classical dg-nerve. Finally, we prove an equivalence between (homologically) non-negatively graded dg-categories on the one hand and templicial modules with a Frobenius structure on the other hand, indicating that nonassociative Frobenius templicial modules and linear quasi-categories can be seen as relaxations of dg-categories.Comment: 68 pages, no figures; revised introduction, added references, revised section 4 for readability, results unchange

    The category of necklaces is Reedy monoidal

    In the first part of this note we further the study of the interactions between Reedy and monoidal structures on a small category, building upon the work of Barwick. We define a Reedy monoidal category as a Reedy category R\mathcal{R} which is monoidal such that for all symmetric monoidal model categories A\textbf{A}, the category Fun(Rop,A)Reedy\mathrm{Fun}\left(\mathcal{R}^{\mathrm{op}}, \textbf{A}\right)_{\mathrm{Reedy}} is model monoidal when equipped with the Day convolution. In the second part, we study the category Nec\mathcal{N}ec of necklaces, as defined by Baues and Dugger-Spivak. Making use of the combinatorial description present in arXiv:2302.02484v1, we streamline some proofs from the literature, and finally show that Nec\mathcal{N}ec is simple Reedy monoidal.Comment: 15 pages, no figures, comments welcome; v2: removed typos, changed notation, updated acknowledgement

    Deformations of quasi-categories in modules

    The framework of templicial objects was put forth in arXiv:2302.02484v1 in order to develop higher categorical concepts in the presence of enrichment. In particular, quasi-categories in modules constitute a subclass of templicial modules which may be considered as a kind of "weak dg-categories (concentrated in homologically positive degrees)" according to arXiv:2005.04778v3. The main goal of the present paper is to initiate the deformation theory of templicial modules.     Induction of conditioned avoidance via mental imagery

    There is a growing interest on how mental imagery may be involved in the onset and maintenance of anxietyrelated disorders. Here, we used an experimental design to investigate whether a key symptom across anxietyrelated disorders, namely avoidance, can be induced via mental imagery. Healthy participants first learned that one neutral stimulus (A) was associated with a mild electric shock and two other neutral stimuli (B and C) were not. They then learned to cancel the shock when A was presented, by pressing a button on a keyboard ('behavioral avoidance'). Next, they were asked to imagine that stimulus B was followed by the shock (i.e., without actual B or shock presentations; Experiment 1; N = 66) or they were shown B and asked to imagine the shock (i.e., without actual shock presentations; Experiment 2; N = 60). Finally, in the test phase, they were shown each of the three stimuli (without the shock) and given the opportunity to make the avoidance response. Results showed that participants tended to avoid B in the test phase in Experiment 1, even though it had never been presented with the shock but not in Experiment 2. We discuss how the findings may explain the acquisition of avoidance in the presentation of innocuousstimuli across anxiety-related disorders

    Genetic diversity and core subset selection in ex situ seed collections of the banana crop wild relative Musa balbisiana

    Crop wild relatives (CWRs) play a key role in crop breeding by providing beneficial trait characteristics for improvement of related crops. CWRs are more efficiently used in breeding if the plant material is genetically characterized, but the diversity in CWR genetic resources has often poorly been assessed. Seven seed collections of Musa balbisiana, an important CWR of dessert and cooking bananas, originating from three natural populations, two feral populations and two ex situ field collections were retrieved and their genetic diversity was quantified using 18 microsatellite markers to select core subsets that conserve the maximum genetic diversity. The highest genetic diversity was observed in the seed collections from natural populations of Yunnan, a region that is part of M. balbisiana's centre of origin. The seeds from the ex situ field collections were less genetically diverse, but contained unique variation with regards to the diversity in all seed collections. Seeds from feral populations displayed low genetic diversity. Core subsets that maximized genetic distance incorporated almost no seeds from the ex situ field collections. In contrast, core subsets that maximized allelic richness contained seeds from the ex situ field collections. We recommend the conservation and additional collection of seeds from natural populations, preferentially originating from the species' region of origin, and from multiple individuals in one population. We also suggest that the number of seeds used for ex situ seed bank regeneration must be much higher for the seed collections from natural populations

    Flow paths and variability of the North Atlantic Current: A comparison of observations and a high-resolution model

    The North Atlantic Current (NAC) is subject to variability on multiannual to decadal time scales, influencing the transport of volume, heat, and freshwater from the subtropical to the eastern subpolar North Atlantic (NA). Current observational time series are either too short or too episodic to study the processes involved. Here we compare the observed continuous NAC transport time series at the western flank of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) and repeat hydrographic measurements at the OVIDE line in the eastern Atlantic with the NAC transport and circulation in the high-resolution (1/20°) ocean model configuration VIKING20 (1960–2008). The modeled baroclinic NAC transport relative to 3400 m (24.5 ± 7.1 Sv) at the MAR is only slightly lower than the observed baroclinic mean of 27.4 ± 4.7 Sv from 1993 to 2008, and extends further north by about 0.5°. In the eastern Atlantic, the western NAC (WNAC) carries the bulk of the transport in the model, while transport estimates based on hydrographic measurements from five repeated sections point to a preference for the eastern NAC (ENAC). The model is able to simulate the main features of the subpolar NA, providing confidence to use the model output to analyze the influence of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). Model based velocity composites reveal an enhanced NAC transport across the MAR of up to 6.7 Sv during positive NAO phases. Most of that signal (5.4 Sv) is added to the ENAC transport, while the transport of the WNAC was independent of the NAO

    In this paper, various control strategies around the synchronous operating point with the aim to reduce the thermal loading of the rotor-side converter in wind turbines equipped with doubly-fed induction generators are investigated regarding their assets and drawbacks. It is shown that there are various possibilities to prolong the lifetime expectation of the converter regarding its thermal stress by implementing these control strategies. However, every control measure requires a careful design process or a slight adjustment of the system to ensure a positive effect on the overall behaviour of the wind turbine

    Analysis of Dynamic Interactions between Different Drivetrain Components with a Detailed Wind Turbine Model

    The presented work describes a detailed analysis of the dynamic interactions among mechanical and electrical drivetrain components of a modern wind turbine under the influence of parameter variations, different control mechanisms and transient excitations. For this study, a detailed model of a 2MW wind turbine with a gearbox, a permanent magnet synchronous generator and a full power converter has been developed which considers all relevant characteristics of the mechanical and electrical subsystems. This model includes an accurate representation of the aerodynamics and the mechanical properties of the rotor and the complete mechanical drivetrain. Furthermore, a detailed electrical modelling of the generator, the full scale power converter with discrete switching devices, its filters, the transformer and the grid as well as the control structure is considered. The analysis shows that, considering control measures based on active torsional damping, interactions between mechanical and electrical subsystems can significantly affect the loads and thus the individual lifetime of the components

    This work discusses the relation between flue gas particle content, mainly related to sulfuric acid aerosols and dust, and corresponding MEA emissions. The work lays grounds for future necessary pre-treatment options for various flue gases with high aerosol content in order to operate post-combustion amine plants with minimum emissions. In 2015, the CO2 Technology Center Mongstad (TCM DA), operated a test campaign using aqueous monoethanolamine ( MEA) solvent at 30 wt%. The main objective was to demonstrate and document the performance of the TCM DA Amine Plant located in Mongstad, Norway. Two weeks were dedicated to the aerosol measurement testing.     Banana seed genetic resources for food security: Status, constraints, and future priorities

    Storing seed collections of crop wild relatives, wild plant taxa genetically related to crops, is an essential component in global food security. Seed banking protects genetic resources from degradation and extinction and provides material for use by breeders. Despite being among the most important crops in the world, banana and plantain crop wild relatives are largely under-represented in genebanks. Nevertheless, banana crop wild relative seed collections are in fact held in different countries, but these have not previously been part of reporting or analysis. To fill this gap, we firstly collated banana seed accession data from 13 institutions in 10 countries. These included 537 accessions containing an estimated 430,000 seeds of 56 species. We reviewed their taxonomic coverage and seed storage conditions including viability estimates. We found that seed accessions have low viability (25% mean) representing problems in seed storage and processing. Secondly, we surveyed 22 institutions involved in banana genetic resource conservation regarding the key constraints and knowledge gaps that institutions face related to banana seed conservation. Major constraints were identified including finding suitable material and populations to collect seeds from, lack of knowledge regarding optimal storage conditions and germination conditions. Thirdly, we carried out a conservation prioritization and gap analysis of Musaceae taxa, using established methods, to index representativeness. Overall, our conservation assessment showed that despite this extended data set banana crop wild relatives are inadequately conserved, with 51% of taxa not represented in seed collections at all; the average conservation assessment showing high priority for conservation according to the index. Finally, we provide recommendations for future collecting, research, and management, to conserve banana and plantain crop wild relatives in seed banks for future generations
